Should same-sex marriages be legalized? What is your view?


It is an undeniable fact that in today’s society there is a growing trend of same-sex relationships , between both gay and lesbian couples. Now, these couples even want to get married legally. This issue has given rise to much dispute between people, who either support or oppose the idea of same-sex marriages and whether they should be legalized.

I think that same-sex marriages should not be legalized, because if it is then it would be going against the course of nature. It seems unnatural to see people of the same gender holding hands or kissing on the streets. If same-sex marriages were legalized, there might be disorder in society as people who oppose the idea would then argue about issues like moral values. In Asian societies, people are very conservative and it might not be accepted. There may be upheaval in families. There might also be social tension, as the conventional way of thinking is that naturally people should be heterosexual and thus it could cause conflicting ideas.


Of course, some people may argue that there is nothing wrong in legalizing same-sex marriages because they feel that this is a modern society which should have freedom of choice, that people should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding they own lives.

Take Elton John for example. He chose to marry another man even though that may not be society’s expectations. Some people feel that not legalizing same-sex marriages is a form of discrimination and give the argument that, who has the right to judge others? Maybe this is true in a way as it is up to the individual how he or she wants to live their life.

According to an article in Newsweek, ‘Not only are states denying gay and lesbian couples the right to marry, they are writing it into state constitution after state constitution.’ ‘Discrimination is being codified into our most important governmental documents and we are allowing it to happen.’ Most countries have not legalized same-sex marriages yet, but Canada has. It even has ‘gay-friendly immigration laws’.

There is still much about homosexuality. People all have different views. As for me, I think that legalizing same-sex marriages should not be allowed if it can be helped.
